However, Linney was raised as an all-only child by her single-mother, a nurse. During the summers when she was with her father, Linney developed a passion for theater. She eventually studied acting first at Brown University then at Juilliard School. After just two short years after graduation, she launched her Broadway-based career. In the following year, she made her debut in the world of film and television. She has appeared in innumerable film, TV and stage shows since.
