Jessie James Decker........................Born Jessica Rose James, Decker's somewhat exotic birthplace was a product of her being raised in a military family. Decker's parents moved to Louisiana in the early 90s. Decker won a regional talent show with a version that was a cover of the Patsy Montana song I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart when she was just nine years old. Decker had moved to Georgia at the age of was 15. She was writing her first songs and made regular trips to Nashville, making the rounds of record companies as well as music publishers looking for a deal. A representative of the independently-owned label Big Yellow Dog Records heard her at 17 and started selling her songs to various labels. Decker agreed to sign a contract with Island/Def Jam after Mercury Records' president David Massey passed her demos to L.A. Reid, head of Island/Def Jam. Jessie James, her moniker for her album that she dropped under that name in August 2009, was a self-titled. Jessie James was reasonably successful and featured Wanted the single which climbed into the Top 40 of the singles charts. But while Decker was always a country artist the album was made and promoted with a pop audience in minds. Decker felt dissatisfied by the two other singles from the album, fought against the management of the record label for greater control. Decker then released her second single Boys in the Summer which is more than a country track. Decker's second studio album was revealed with the title Daughter of a Gypsy, or Sweet American Dreams. Mercury was able to cancel it, and three of Decker's country singles performed poorly. Her album was eventually released.
